Abraham scores twice as Chelsea ease past West Ham

Tammy Abraham scored a quickfire brace deep into the second half as Chelsea beat West Ham on Monday night at Stamford Bridge. Three goals and 3 points sees the Blues leapfrog Tottenham into 5th on the Premier League table. It was the first time this season that Chelsea defeated a side in the top half of the Premier League table.

Chelsea 3-0 West Ham -Report

Frank Lampard’s men returned to winning ways in the Premier League following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Everton and Wolves. It was a morale boosting win for the Blues who weren’t at their best but still managed 3 goals against the Hammers. Jorginho had a go from 25 yards out, but his shot was always rising and landed awkwardly in the stands. Thiago Silva’s 10th minute bullet header gave Chelsea the lead in a dominant first half display that was marred by the forced substitution of Ben Chilwell. The left-back was taken off after twisting his ankle very early in the first period. He was replaced by Emerson.

Chelsea could not add to their lead, with just the solitary goal separating the sides at half time. West Ham grew into the game in the second half but could not muster any shot on target.

Timo Werner missed a handful of chances for the hosts, continuing his dry spell in front of goal. The German international has not scored in any of his last 8 games for Chelsea. He should have scored when played in by N’golo Kante, but his tame effort went straight to the keeper.

Werner will be thankful that his fellow striker Tammy Abraham was prolific on the night. Christian Pulisic failed to head in a cross and Tammy was on hand to curl in the loose ball for Chelsea’s second goal. Minutes later, he slid in a third, reacting quickest to Werner’s scuffed effort.

The win puts Chelsea 5th and one point behind 4th placed Everton. The Blues are involved in another London derby on Saturday when they take on Arsenal at the Emirates.

Another clean sheet for Mendy

West Ham were unable to muster any shot on target all through the game, meaning that Edouard Mendy had little to do. It’s another clean sheet for the summer recruit, his first in 3 games. After shipping 2 goals in each of his last 2 games, Mendy will be happy with the clean sheet even though he didn’t have to stain his kits for it.
