France Football to hand out 2 Ballons d’Or in 2021; awards date revealed

The date for the 2021 Ballon d’Or award ceremony has been announced. According to L’Equipe, the event will hold on December 5, in Paris.

The Ballon d’Or is an illustrious award usually given to the best footballer of the year. Lionel Messi has won the award 6 times, the most by any footballer in history. Only one footballer can win the Ballon d’Or in any given year.

However, for the first time in the history of the awards, France Football are set to dish out two golden balls at the gala. This is because the award was not given out in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski was hot favorite to win the award last year before it’s cancellation. Lewy scored 55 goals in 47 appearances and helped Bayern Munich to a treble comprising of the Champions League, the  DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga title. Lewandowski to finally win Ballon d'Or

The Pole is set to finally get his hands on the coveted prize following announcements that the 2020 Ballon d’Or will be awarded alongside the 2021 Ballon d’Or to the respective winners. That is two Ballons d’Or in one awards ceremony!

Lionel Messi’s Copa America triumph means he is likely going to win the award for a record 7 times. The Argentinian won the golden boot and the player of the tournament award at the rescheduled Copa America in Brazil.  Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne, N’golo Kante and Neymar are also among the contenders after impressive an impressive season with their club sides.
