Manchester City coasted to the Premier League title last season in convincing fashion. It was their third title in 4 seasons, underlining their domestic dominance under Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard has built a formidable team capable of competing with the best teams in Europe. Reaching the Champions League final for the first time in their history is a testament of the progress made under Pep.
Although the Citizens had Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres among their ranks last season, they played large parts of the campaign either without a recognized center forward or without a first choice striker.
Ahead of the new season, the authorities at Manchester City are expected to open their checkbooks as Pep goes in search of a potent striker. Aguero is now with Barcelona and Pep does not trust Jesus or Ferran enough to rely on them all season. Thus Man City will go into the transfer window in search of a striker. City also need reinforcements in midfield despite their depth in that department, and a new defender can come in handy should an injury or dip in form occur. Bearing these in mind, we have listed below five (5) top players that Manchester City are likely to sign this transfer window:
Man City transfer news: Two strikers, two midfielders, one defender; 5 Key players Man City Can Sign This Summer
1. Harry Kane
Highly sought after across Europe thanks to his desire to leave Tottenham, Harry Kane could be the missing piece in Pep’s puzzle. The 28 year old is capable of filling the void left by the departure of Sergio Aguero, given that he has over 168 Premier League goals to his name already.
Harry Kane is a transfer target of several top teams home and abroad, including Manchester United and Chelsea. The Englishman seems to be available in the transfer market this window after expressing his desire to leave North London. Man City have what Kane wants (ability to win trophy) and Kane definitely has what City needs (goals).
2. Erling Haaland
Pep seems to have a special admiration for young talents who can easily be molded to suit his style of play. Perhaps red hot Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland can fit into this description? Haaland who turns 21 in July is the subject of many transfer speculations with reports linking him to clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, Man City and Man United in the last couple of months.
Dortmund would prefer to keep the player for at least one more season with want-away Sancho likely to leave this summer. However, a club with the purchasing power of Man City can surely price Haaland away from the Signal Iduna Park, can’t they?
3. Jack Grealish
Although Man City has the likes of Mahrez, Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernado, Gundogan, Rodri, and Fernandinho to lineup in midfield, Pep never seems to get tired of creative midfielders. Jack Grealish is one of the Premier League’s hottest assets having steered Aston Villa to an 11th place finish last season.
Grealish brings close control, dribbling, vision and creativity to the table, qualities that would interest Pep Guardiola.
4. Declan Rice
Much talk was made of Pep not starting a recognized holding midfielder in City’s UCL final defeat to Chelsea. Man City’s current holding midfielders are Fernandinho and Rodri, with the former already past his prime.
Signing Declan Rice from West Ham would further strengthen a side that is already very strong in the middle, with the midfielder’s versatility a useful asset. City are not the only club monitoring Rice, as Chelsea, have also been linked with the player who was a product of their academy and a friend of Mason Mount.
5. Achraf Hakimi
Deemed surplus to requirements at Real Madrid some months ago, Achraf Hakimi is now a much sought after player after helping Inter Milan to a first Serie A title in eleven years. The 22-year old has an €80 million price tag on him and is regarded as one the best wing backs in the world right now.
Hakimi may be a difficult transfer target for City as he is strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
