Is there any goal celebration technique more elegant and exquisite than Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘siuuu’? The renowned forward has made a point of demonstrating this incredible celebration hundreds of times. But where did the ‘siuuu’ come from? It’s a scene that every football fan is accustomed to witnessing on a regular basis. Cristiano Ronaldo leaps into the air, turns around, and exclaims ‘siuuu!’ before landing with his arms outstretched.
Ronaldo has performed the celebrations countless times. Being one of the best strikers of all time, he has scored an incredible lot of goals and each one of those goals have been followed by passionate celebration. The most recent rendition was during Man United’s 1-0 victory over Norwich City last week. While Norwich fans were shooting the still-fun-to-watch siuuu celebration, Ronaldo celebrated the game-winning goal.
Siuuu Meaning: Ronaldo explains the celebration!
During an interview in 2019, Ronaldo explained the idea behind the celebration. He told Man United’s official website: “I started to say ‘si’, it’s like ‘yes’, when I was at Real Madrid”.
“When we would win, everyone would say ‘siiiii’ and so I started to say it. I don’t know why, it was natural, I was in the USA and we played against Chelsea (in 2013) and I don’t know where this is coming from, the celebration. “I just scored the goal and it just came out. It was just natural, to be honest. Since that, I started to do it more often and I feel like the supporters and the fans see it and they’re like ‘Cristiano, siiiiiuuuu’. “I’m like ‘wow! People are reminded of me because of it!’ So it’s good, and I’ll continue doing it like that.”

A different origin!
Just like Ronaldo himself, fans remember the celebration being born during the superstar’s time at Real Madrid. However, the origins of the move can be traced back to his first spell at Man United. Back in 2008, Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in Man United’s 6-0 win over Newcastle. After converting a spectacular free-kick, the Portuguese celebrated in a similar way to the iconic celebration. Ronaldo could not complete the celebration, but his movement is still similar to his ‘siuuu’ celebration.
How many ‘siuuu’ celebrations this season?
Ronaldo has enjoyed great form since returning to Man United in the summer transfer window. The former Juventus star has re-established himself as a key player, scoring vital goals for the English giants. Following the appointment of Ralf Rangnick, fans were worried about Ronaldo’s spot in the squad. However, the Portuguese impressed the German coach in his first appearance as the Man United boss. After a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, Rangnick praised Ronaldo for his work off the ball. Asked about his pressing tactic, Rangnick said: “We wanted to play with two strikers, especially in the central position. By the way, Cristiano Ronaldo’s work off the ball, chapeau.”
