Champions League Road to Istanbul 2021
Monchengladbach vs Man City
After surrendering top spot in Group B to Real Madrid on Match day 6, Monchengladbach were rewarded with a crunch tie with Pep Guardiola’s Man City in the round of 16. The German side are in the UCL knockout rounds for the first time since 1978. On paper, this looks like a mountain task, but Monchengladbach have scored 16 goals in the Champions League this season, 3 more than Man City. However, they are very porous at the back, having let in 9 goals, 8 more than City have let in. Can they stop City who are aiming to have a first taste of Champions League glory?
Lazio vs Bayern Munich
Defending Champions Bayern Munich have been handed a date with Group F runners-up Lazio. The Italians are in this round for the first time since 2000. Just like Bayern, Lazio finished the group stage unbeaten but won just 2 of their 6 games.
Atlético Madrid vs Chelsea
Although Chelsea won Group E comfortably, they have been handed a tough test in the round of 16. Frank Lampard’s men will battle Diego Simeone’s well drilled Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side sit second in La Liga and are ahead of Barcelona and City rivals Real Madrid. Chelsea and Atletico last met in this competition in 2017 having been pitted in the same group. The Blues won 2-1 in Madrid while the home reverse fixture ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Leipzig vs Liverpool
Last season’s semi finalists Leipzig will tackle 2019 winners Liverpool. Leipzig progressed to the round of 16 ahead of Manchester United, beat the Red devils 3-2 in the final group match. Jurgen Klopp’s side could not get past this round last season but they would be aiming to do better this time around.
Porto vs Juventus
Cristiano Ronaldo will return to his country Portugal, as Juventus have face Porto in the round of 16. The Old ladies beat Barcelona to finish as Group G winners, with the Portuguese striker scoring 2 penalties at Camp Nou. They have not won the Champions League since 1996 and have finished runners up more times (7) than any other team in the history of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona vs PSG
Will this finally be the year for PSG? They were so close to winning the UCL last season, but surrendered to a superior Bayern Munich in the finals. This season they will have to overcome Barcelona in the next round to keep their hopes of winning the prestigious trophy alive. This meeting could also see Neymar return to Camp Nou for the first time since leaving Spain in 2017. He last won the Champions League with Barca in 2015.
Sevilla vs Dortmund
Halaand will be hoping to extend his Champions League goal record when Dortmund play Sevilla in the round of 16. The Norwegian prodigy is joint top scorer in the competition this season. He recently became the youngest player to reach 15 UCL goals. Dortmund finished as group winners while Sevilla were runners up in group F.
Atalanta vs Real Madrid
The Champions League draw sees La Liga Champions Real Madrid drawn against Atalanta who finished as quarter finalists last season. Both side sealed qualification on Match day 6 with impressive victories. Real Madrid beat Monchengladbach in Spain while Atalanta overcame Ajax away from home.
